Child Accident Prevention Week 23rd – 29th June 2008

Southern Safer Homes is a team of Home Safety Officers working in the Southern Group of councils (Armagh, Banbridge, Craigavon, Dungannon and Newry & Mourne) helping you towards a safer home. The scheme is joint funded by Investing for Health and the above mentioned councils.

Startling statistics: Every year more than 125, 000 people attend A & E departments or a minor injury unit of a hospital in the Southern Health and Social Services Board area due to a home accident-Startling but true. In the last 3 years (2004-2007) 540 children were admitted to hospitals in the same area as a result of a home accident. Falls, accidental poisonings, scalds and burns are the major types of home injuries. Preventing accidents saves lives and improves quality of life and this is the message we would ask you to consider during Child Accident Prevention Week.

If you have a child under 5 years old or are over 65 years old and would like a Home Safety visit or advice about safety in the home, please ring Environmental Health Department on 028 3752 9626 and ask to speak to the Home Safety Officer.
