Environmental Protection

The Environmental Protection team work to minimise the harmful effects of pollution on people and the local environment. The team have specialities in Local Air Quality, Water Quality, Noise Control, Industrial Pollution Prevention and Control, and sources of environmental radiation.

The Environmental Protection team contribute to the development and effective delivery of NI environmental policy on behalf of our local district councils.

The team are represented on the CEHOG Northern Ireland Pollution Sub-Group, the Contaminated Land Liaison Group, the Northern Ireland Radiation Monitoring Group, the Southern Investing for Health – Neighbourhood and Environment Issue Group, the Regional Planning Liaison Group and the Industrial Pollution Liaison Group.

The team co-ordinates and administers the Southern Environmental Protection Group which disseminates regional policy and enforcement issues whilst providing a forum for advice and guidance on local matters.

The team is responsible for the management of local air quality monitoring programs and the assessment of results for four of our local district councils.

We support and guide our local district council’s work towards reducing air pollution in the local area. The individual Local Air Quality Strategies and Action Plans are available from the respective district council. We aim to provide the strategies, policies and promotion of ideas to ensure that our local air quality continues to improve.

The team provides guidance and support to our local district councils on industrial pollution prevention matters. In addition through the CEHOG Northern Ireland Pollution Sub-Group we provide a monitoring and auditing role to ensure quality in the councils’ delivery of their industrial pollution inspection programme.

The Environmental Protection team provides an investigation and consultation service for our local district councils dealing with a wide range of environmental matters. Southern Group maintains specialist technical equipment to assist in environmental investigations.
